First, let me start by introducing myself.
My name is Joseph Drups.
Financial Independence at 30
Back in Dec of 2014, at the age of 28 I left my cushy but unfulfilling engineering job to pursue a dream of owning my own business. I built a digital marketing firm from scratch and I was financially independent 2 years later, at age 30. Financial Independence is that point when your business and investments comfortably pay for your lifestyle plus enough to invest. I bought my first business at age 31 because I wanted to completely separate my time from my income.
Financial Freedom at 34
By age 34, my income was automated and took less than 2 hrs per week to pay for my lifestyle. That’s when I achieved Financial Freedom.
There was just one problem. I was still hungry. The thought of early retirement was boring and I wanted to see what I could achieve if I pursued my highest potential. Instead of coasting, I doubled up. I acquired another business, then another… and another.
In this process, I learned how to take a business and set it up to run as a profitable, cash flowing, passive investment from day one. I learned the secrets of the Passive Money Machine.
This wasn’t something only for money managers sitting in their skyscrapers on Wall Street but everyday people could invest in Main Street businesses. I was hooked.

Sure there were a handful of people who were selling courses on how to buy your own small business. However, these were mostly people who had bought one business and settled. There was no one teaching people how to buy stakes in cash flowing small businesses to fast track their FIRE journey. This had been the key to unlocking my dreams and success.
The high returns and cash flow focus was entirely different than the retire-in-30-years perspective of modern investing.
This was the key to Fast Financial Independence and Fast Forwarding Financial Freedom.
I was passionate about building a community of investors, operators, and FI enthusiasts who wanted to drive in this fast lane of investing. That’s when I began putting together the Fast FI community.

At 34 years old, I had purchased 6 businesses and had successfully automated 5 of them. Passive-FI-ing the 6th was my current project and I had a 7th business in the pipeline.
At the time, my business had made it on the Inc. 5000 list of fastest growing companies multiple times in a row.
In order to take stock, and plan my next 10 year project, I took a month off of work to dream, plan, and pray. During this time of pressing pause, I realized there was a gap in the Financial Independence (FI) training and literature.

Who is this program designed for?

How does a Founder Group work?
- Drups deal makers match investors and operators to find acquisition opportunities together. By participating in a business search, an investor can earn exceptional returns and structure a deal according to their needs (business niche, lifestyle perks, extra kickers…etc.).
- Once investors commit to fund a search with a retainer, they get the opportunity to set the parameters of the search. They also have the right to select an operator and provide feedback into the process.
- The business search produces multiple business acquisition opportunities. Investors have the opportunity to sit in or view recorded calls with the seller to determine if the business is a good fit. If the financial model works and the founding team agrees on the opportunity, then an LOI is submitted. When an LOI is accepted, the team moves into due diligence and negotiating the final purchase agreement. Finally, after a site visit and 2-3 months of due diligence the business acquisition moves to Closing.
How is this different from the other programs offered out on the web?
- The main opportunities in private market business investing are: 1) Become and operator and purchase your own business. 2) Invest in private equity funds. 3) Know someone who’s purchasing a small business and negotiate your own stake.
- I explain the three options in more depth below. However, the way that Drups Founder Groups are different is that: A) They offer passive cash flow from year 1. B) Generally, they offer high returns than Private Equity, and more scalability and risk mitigation than “knowing the operator approach. Finally, they avoid the full time job, risk, and stress required to become the operator. B) They offer more control which allows investors to earn higher returns, negotiate lifestyle benefits, and add in investment kickers (board seats with pay, fractional executive roles, …etc). C) The investor participates in the business in a way that allows them to influence, mentor, and invest in the culture of the business. They have the personal experience of being an owner and knowing the people within the business. This is a more humanizing way of investing, and offers a stark difference when compared to the sterile selection of stocks from a spreadsheet. - Operator: Operators with the money and knowledge to acquire a business on their own, likely aren’t a good match for a founder group unless they want to go after a larger business than they could do on their own. Our deal makers are trained to fill in the knowledge gap, source deals, match investors and operators, and finally offer the Overwatch Insurance that many investors want to support a final investment. That package works for the right operator who is intersted in partnering on deals.
- Private Equity: Out of the above three options, private equity funds offer passive options, but lock up your money for 5-10 yrs without providing cash flow. They also don’t offer the level of returns, consistent cash flow, or control over the process that working directly with the operator offers.
- Knowing the Operator: Oftentimes, small investors get into investing in small businesses because a friend or family is purchasing a business. This isn’t scalable and doesn’t offer diversification. Our repeatable process of incubating new acquisitions provides a path to create a portfolio of high return investments.
